District 9

October 2, 2009 – 3:41 pm | by Lianne Jones

district_9_movie_poster14Peter Jackson and director Neil Blomkamp are bringing a new type of alien film to our screens with District 9.

The film is about a group of aliens who become stuck on earth after their Mothership breaks down. The people of Johannesburg find them malnourished and so they set up a secure camp for them to live in where they can be separate from the human population.

However, this does not quite work for the locals as the aliens (or ‘prawns’) start to break the rules of their confinement. The authorities decide it’s time for them to be moved outside of Johannesburg into a new camp and so they are all served eviction notices which they are expected to cooperate with.

Your Blu-ray Experience!

September 27, 2009 – 12:35 pm | by admin

blu_ray_logo_4003It’s unlikely that Blu-ray really needs a lot of help to gain space in people’s living rooms. After winning the most recent format war, and having a wide range of players available, particularly the Playstation 3, it looks like Blu-ray is set to gain in dominance over the coming years.

However DVD still rules due to it’s huge userbase and back catalogue, but that’s where Sony Pictures new website comes into play. experiencebluray.co.uk is a comprehensive website that not only covers all you need to know about the format, but also highlights the huge number of new titles already out, or coming out soon.

You can view trailers, film details and a list of all the Blu-Ray Disc Bonus materials, as well as Blu-ray related news and exclusive competitions.

Dragonball Evolution

September 17, 2009 – 11:06 am | by Peekay

I am always wary of films that have their genesis in the manga market – it’s not necessarily that there aren’t any good storytellers in manga, just that the stories so very rarely survive the transition to the big screen.

Unfortunately this is no exception.  Dragonball Evolution tells of High School student Goku and his mysterious dragonball that he receives from his grandfather when he turns 18.  Despite being called a Dragonball and having the name Goku, apparently he is unaware that it might have powers!

Of course there are not only more Dragonballs out there – 7 in total – but there is also an evil adversary out to collect them all.  The wonderfully named Lord Piccolo kills Goku’s grandfather while trying to find the dragonball, setting Goku off on his mission to collect all 7 before Piccolo can get them all, seize control of the world and then destroy it – an act which makes the seizing control bit a tad pointless….

The cast isn’t too bad with Chow Yun Fat (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and James Marsters (Buffy, Angel) but the whole thing is only a little diverting and probably not worth the effort!

Orphan cinema review

September 7, 2009 – 12:13 pm | by Lianne Jones

orphanposterIt’s difficult to know where to start with this film and I can’t quite make up my mind whether I liked it or not as Orphan is horrifying and disturbing but also strangely gripping.

Orphan is about a couple who are looking to adopt an older child as an addition to their family after loosing their baby. At the orphanage they meet Esther, a 9-year-old girl originally from Russia who appears to be a very talented and intelligent girl who is a little bit different to the other children.

John and Kate decide to give Esther a chance and they take her home with them to join their young family. Everything seems to be perfect to begin with as Esther is sweet and polite but, strange things soon start to happen around her and Kate becomes suspicious. Kate tries to express her concerns to husband John but, he just can’t see things the same way until it’s too late.
