The Rocker DVD review

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

The Rocker stars Rainn Wilson as Robert ‘Fish’ Fishman, a failed drummer who spends his life resenting Vesuvius, the band who dropped him just before they rocketed into stardom in the eighties.

Fish is about to give up hope when his nephew Matt (Josh Gad) asks him to play with his high school rock band A.D.D who need a drummer for their prom gig.

Fish’s desire for music and the rock’n'roll lifestyle is reignited as A.D.D kick off their career and embark on their first tour. Fish grabs his second chance at success with both hands and hopes to reach the dizzy heights of music fame.

The Rocker is a fun film with an interesting plot and some good characters. It isn’t a side-splitting comedy but, there is still plenty of humour throughout, making it an entertaining watch.

The Rocker is about to hit DVD shelves (9th March) packed with special features, including: Audio commentary by director Peter Cattaneo and actor Rainn Wilson, Audio commentary by actors Josh Gad, Teddy Geiger, Emma Stone and Jason Sudeikis, 10 deleted scenes, gag reel, 7 featurettes, Vesuvius gags plus ‘I’m not Bitter’ music video.

Futurama Into The Wild Green Yonder review

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

futurama_title_screenAs we approach ten years since the first Futurama episode hit our TV screens it’s fitting that the fourth, and apparently final, feature-length episode comes out on DVD.  A lot has happened in animated comedy features in a decade, some of which could be traced to Futurama, but does this franchise still hold up?

Into the Wild Green Yonder is not a good start for a Futurama newbie as we are not given the background to how pizza delivery boy Philip J. Fry made it from being cryogenically frozen as 2000 began, and then brought back to life on New Year’s Eve 2999.  That sort of info would be useful to any stranger to the Futurama world.

In this film mankind stands on the brink of a wondrous new Green Age, but ancient dark forces, “three times older than time itself”, are determined to wreak destruction.  Which sounds more dramatic until you mention the universe’s largest mini-golf course, Bender’s trysts with a fembot married to the mob, and Leela turning eco-terrorist hunted by Zapp Brannigan.

All in all it’s a good episode of Futurama that just about stands up to being spread into a feature.

The fourth and final Feature-length Futurama hits the DVD and Blue-ray shelves packed with bonus features such as an audio commentary by creator Matt Groening, a making-of mockumentary, and “Zapp brannigan’s Guide to Making Love at a Woman”.

It’s a Wonderful Life DVD Review

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Well what can you say about this film?  It’s a classic, a Christmas classic at that which is quite an accolade for a film which is in black & white and is over 50 years old.  In these days when so many films are made just to exploit the Christmas film market it’s still warming to see It’s a Wonderful Life being a part of our yuletide.

George Bailey (James Stewart) is the eternal optimist who wants to see the world, to break out of the little town of Bedford Falls, to shake “the dust of this crummy little town off my feet”.  But this never works out for George.  He stays at home to help his fathers “Building and Loan” to keep running against the evil machinations of wheelchair-bound bank manager Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore).  And when his brother returns from college, and George expects that he can then go to college his plans are thwarted by his brothers marriage and work plans.

The bright spots of marrying his childhood sweetheart (Donna Reed) and raising a family end up being soured by his failure to get away and see the world, and a mistake by his Uncle Billy with some Building and Loan funds, exploited by Potter. (more…)
