Ong Bak: The Beginning review

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Following the success of ‘Ong Bak’ and ‘Warrior King’, Tony Jaa (as lead actor and co-director) returns with another Martial Arts spectacular.

“The Beginning” is set 600 years ago in Feudal Thailand and follows the frankly god-awful life of Tien who is forced into fighting to avenge the slaughter of his family. After being taken in and trained by a vicious group of bandit outlaws he becomes one of the most dangerous, accomplished and feared warriors in the land.

And yes that is the plot, give or take a couple of bits of double-crossing and lost love. It’s lucky that the martial arts sequences are so spectacular, though one in particular goes on for so long it teeters on the brink of ridiculousness, because the plot sure isn’t going to help this survive.

Ong-Bak: The Beginning is the epic tale of one boy’s journey into manhood and the demons he must face in order to accept the loss of his beloved family and exact revenge on those responsible. Set in feudal Thailand 600 hundred years ago we follow Tien as he evolves into one of the most dangerous warriors in the land. These events lead to some the most jaw dropping fight scenes that have ever been portrayed on screen, shot against the epic backdrop of Thailand’s diverse and unforgettable landscape.

The DVD and Blu-Ray versions are out on 15th February.

Adventureland – released 8th Feb 2010

Monday, February 1st, 2010

On what should be an unsatisfying summer, James is introduced to the shady goings on of the fun fair world as he swaps cheap Czech beer, world-famous museums and cute Italian girls for stroppy parents, stuffed toys and screaming kids. But stumbling upon an assortment of misfits, goons and lost souls, James’ stint at Adventureland is about to prove more enlightening than he could ever have imagined…

Amongst the outsiders he encounters is witty co-worker Em Lewin (Kristen Stewart) who instantly captures his heart. Clueless to her secret affair with rocker turned maintenance man Mick Connell (Ryan Reynolds), he sets out to win her affections, but not without the typical teen trials and tribulations thrown in along the way.

Adventureland is available from February 8th 2010 on Blu-Ray, DVD, and VOD.

The Proposal DVD

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

“The Proposal” tells the story of Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock), a hotshot New York book editor who’s facing deportation and needs to marry her hated assistant, Andrew (Ryan Reynolds), to remain in the country.  Unfortunately, she hatches this scheme right on the heels of Andrew’s grandmother’s (Betty White) birthday, forcing him to go up north to Alaska; and, of course, her to go up with him, to announce the proposal to the rest of the family.

It’s contrived and obvious – and doesn’t deviate from that with any enormous surprises, but just keeps ploughing the rom-com genre. The two leads are pleasant and convincing enough but without some originality it’s difficult to be sold on the story, let alone the characters.

This really is one just for those who are either Rom-com completists or like the work of Bullock/Reynolds. Not my cup of tea.
