The Invention of Lying is about Mark Bellison, a man who is down on his luck as he finds himself out of a job, facing eviction from his home and unable to woo the girl of his dreams. He is almost ready to admit defeat when he discovers his hidden ability to lie in a world where people only ever tell the truth; this completely turns his life around but, is it really for the better?

The opening credits and the first sequence of this film are very strange and as the plot continues it all becomes a bit too silly; there are a few funny moments throughout but, nothing that really makes you want to laugh out loud, which is quite a disappointment. Gervais is ok as Mark Bellison but, none of the characters in the film are particularly gripping, which adds to the feeling that the film is a bit of a let down. The idea behind this film is really clever and it’s a real shame that it doesn’t quite hit the mark.

The Invention of Lying is the kind of film that is fine to watch if there’s nothing better on but, it’s definitely not one of this Autumns must see movies.

I really enjoy The Simpsons, even the bad episodes are a good way to pass the time, but do I need to have the episodes at hand whenever I want? Probably not.

Maybe this is the dilemma of the DVD distributor these days – with so much choice on digital TV, and on-demand television gaining ground, what is the selling point of the Box-set?

In the case of the Series 12 of the Simpsons DVD Boxset the selling point is the imaginative and detailed extras, as well as appealing to the Simpsons completists out there. You’ve got episode commentaries, deleted scenes, animation showcase and a whole lot more.

And then there are the 21 episodes – some great, some middling but worth a watch.

So it’s a good boxset, if you like that sort of thing.

The Boat That Rocked is packed with the cream of the British acting crop as it stars the likes of Rhys Ifans, Bill Nighy, Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branagh and Nick Frost.

The film takes us back to the swinging 60’s and to a time where pirate radio was unbelievably popular, with one radio station in particular, Radio Rock, broadcasting to an immense fan base live from the North Sea.

Carl (Tom Sturridge) is sent to join the DJ crew by his mum Charlotte (Emma Thompson) after being kicked out of school but, far from being straightened out by working at sea, Carl is swept along in the fun and adventure that is Radio Rock’s life of 24 hour non-stop rock and pop shenanigans.

Radio Rock doesn’t come without its problems though as Government Minister Dormandy (Kenneth Branagh) and his new recruit Twatt (Jack Davenport) make ruthless attempts to shut down the pirate station and bring an end to the joy their broadcasting brings to listeners all over the UK.

The Boat That Rocked is everything you would expect of a great British comedy with its unique humour, a superb cast and an unusual and exciting plot that keeps you entertained from start to finish.

This film will definitely float (or rock) your comedy boat and is a must see if you fancy a laugh this Spring.

John Travolta is the voice of Bolt, a dog who is the star of a hit TV show, in this animated movie from the Walt Disney studios.

All Bolt knows in life is his TV show; he really believes that everything that happens on it is real, that he genuinely has super powers and he is protecting his beloved owner Penny (Miley Cyrus) from the bad guys.

Everything changes for Bolt when he is accidentally shipped to New York City and has to find his way back to Penny. He meets a cat called Mittens (Susie Essman) and Rhino the hamster (Mark Walton) who is a TV-addict and Bolts biggest fan and the three of them have to work together to get Bolt home.

Bolt’s journey makes him realise that he doesn’t really have super powers and the life he lives is not as real as he always believed, he has to learn how to be a hero with out all the special effects and how to live life as a real dog.

Bolt 3D is an enjoyable film although there doesn’t seem to be much point in it being in 3D. The plot is fun and entertaining but, is not one of Disney’s best. Overall it is a good family film and will definitely be a hit with the kids.

As we approach ten years since the first Futurama episode hit our TV screens it’s fitting that the fourth, and apparently final, feature-length episode comes out on DVD. A lot has happened in animated comedy features in a decade, some of which could be traced to Futurama, but does this franchise still hold up?

Into the Wild Green Yonder is not a good start for a Futurama newbie as we are not given the background to how pizza delivery boy Philip J. Fry made it from being cryogenically frozen as 2000 began, and then brought back to life on New Year’s Eve 2999. That sort of info would be useful to any stranger to the Futurama world.

In this film mankind stands on the brink of a wondrous new Green Age, but ancient dark forces, “three times older than time itself”, are determined to wreak destruction. Which sounds more dramatic until you mention the universe’s largest mini-golf course, Bender’s trysts with a fembot married to the mob, and Leela turning eco-terrorist hunted by Zapp Brannigan.

All in all it’s a good episode of Futurama that just about stands up to being spread into a feature.

The fourth and final Feature-length Futurama hits the DVD and Blue-ray shelves packed with bonus features such as an audio commentary by creator Matt Groening, a making-of mockumentary, and “Zapp brannigan’s Guide to Making Love at a Woman”.

Ricky Gervais is Bertram Pincus, a dentist who is not much of a people-person, in this romantic comedy Ghost Town.

Pincus dies briefly in hospital during a standard procedure but, is brought back to life after just a few minutes. This experience leaves him with the ability to see and communicate with ghosts, much to his dismay, and they all want some sort of favour from him.

Recently deceased Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear) is particularly hard to shake off as he pesters Pincus around the clock, until he agrees to help split up Frank’s widow from her new man.

Bertram Pincus finds his life changing as he falls in love and realises that he needs to change his attitude towards others if he doesn’t want to spend the rest of his life alone.

I’m not much of a Ricky Gervais fan but, he is great in this film. He is very funny as the anti-social dentist and Ghost Town is hardly the conventional rom-com, which makes it all the more entertaining. It definitely stands out against many of the run-of-the-mill rom-coms that hit the big screen.

The plot is fun and engaging and there is plenty of humour to keep the audience amused throughout. I would definitely recommend this film to all comedy fans.

Stiller plays Tugg Speedman, a pampered actor set to star in the most expensive war movie ever made alongside Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr) a highly successful, award winning actor who just might steal Tugg’s limelight.

Their co-stars come in the form of Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black) comedy star of ‘The Fatties’ (which is not dissimilar to ‘The Klumps’ with Eddie Murphy), hip-hop artist come entrepreneur come actor, Alpa Chino (Brandon T Jackson) and newbie actor Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel).

The group are thrown into a real-life scenario as they begin to shoot their film, unawares that what they’re experiencing is real warfare. They have to learn to get along and to get over their star status if they are going to survive.

Tropic Thunder is an interesting and often funny watch with plenty of homage to Hollywood.

Sidney is proud of his alternative publication ‘Post Modern Review’, and lives to poke fun at the celebrity culture but, his whole world is about to change when he is offered a job at a top New York magazine ‘Sharps’ by one of the most prominent editors in the business, Clayton Harding (Jeff Bridges).

His sense of style and humour isn’t appreciated by his high flying Sharps colleagues and Sidney struggles to fit in. He forms an unlikely friendship with fellow journalist Alison Olsen (Kirsten Dunst) who tries to help him adjust to the protocol of the New York celebrity scene.

How to Lose Friends and Alienate People is a great watch. It is full of humour throughout and Simon Pegg is fantastic as Sidney. It’s definitely a must see film for this autumn and fans of Pegg will love this new edition to his filmography.

Zohan (Adam Sandler) is an Israeli Special Forces Soldier who is fed up of the fighting and the hatred. He fakes his death in a battle with his arch enemy The Phantom (John Turturro) so that he can escape to New York to follow his dream to become a top hairstylist and make people ‘silky smooth’.

Sandler is brilliant as the unusual Zohan; his performance is zany and amusing throughout. He brings his usual suspects to the cast in the form of John Turturro as The Phantom and Rob Schneider as Salim. The random mix of characters really adds a boost of comedy to this film.

Mariah Carey makes an appearance as herself and sadly her poor acting and her diva attitude bring the film down, having her appear really doesn’t fit in with the general tone of the film.

Putting Mariah aside, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan is a brilliantly funny film that is packed with plenty of daft humour. It’s a great film to escape reality and enter the bizarre world of Adam Sandler.
