invention_of_lyingThe Invention of Lying is a new comedy by Ricky Gervais and while the concept is interesting, the film itself doesn’t quite live up to expectations.

The Invention of Lying is about Mark Bellison, a man who is down on his luck as he finds himself out of a job, facing eviction from his home and unable to woo the girl of his dreams. He is almost ready to admit defeat when he discovers his hidden ability to lie in a world where people only ever tell the truth; this completely turns his life around but, is it really for the better? The Simpsons – Series 12 DVD Boxset

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

I really enjoy The Simpsons, even the bad episodes are a good way to pass the time, but do I need to have the episodes at hand whenever I want? Probably not.

Maybe this is the dilemma of the DVD distributor these days – with so much choice on digital TV, and on-demand television gaining ground, what is the selling point of the Box-set?

In the case of the Series 12 of the Simpsons DVD Boxset the selling point is the imaginative and detailed extras, as well as appealing to the Simpsons completists out there. You’ve got episode commentaries, deleted scenes, animation showcase and a whole lot more.

And then there are the 21 episodes – some great, some middling but worth a watch.

So it’s a good boxset, if you like that sort of thing.

The Boat That Rocked

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

boat_that_rockedThe Boat That Rocked is packed with the cream of the British acting crop as it stars the likes of Rhys Ifans, Bill Nighy, Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branagh and Nick Frost.

The film takes us back to the swinging 60’s and to a time where pirate radio was unbelievably popular, with one radio station in particular, Radio Rock, broadcasting to an immense fan base live from the North Sea.

Carl (Tom Sturridge) is sent to join the DJ crew by his mum Charlotte (Emma Thompson) after being kicked out of school but, far from being straightened out by working at sea, Carl is swept along in the fun and adventure that is Radio Rock’s life of 24 hour non-stop rock and pop shenanigans. Bolt 3D cinema review

Friday, February 20th, 2009

bolt3dJohn Travolta is the voice of Bolt, a dog who is the star of a hit TV show, in this animated movie from the Walt Disney studios.

All Bolt knows in life is his TV show; he really believes that everything that happens on it is real, that he genuinely has super powers and he is protecting his beloved owner Penny (Miley Cyrus) from the bad guys.

Everything changes for Bolt when he is accidentally shipped to New York City and has to find his way back to Penny. He meets a cat called Mittens (Susie Essman) and Rhino the hamster (Mark Walton) who is a TV-addict and Bolts biggest fan and the three of them have to work together to get Bolt home.

Bolt’s journey makes him realise that he doesn’t really have super powers and the life he lives is not as real as he always believed, he has to learn how to be a hero with out all the special effects and how to live life as a real dog.

Bolt 3D is an enjoyable film although there doesn’t seem to be much point in it being in 3D. The plot is fun and entertaining but, is not one of Disney’s best. Overall it is a good family film and will definitely be a hit with the kids.
