The Proposal DVD

“The Proposal” tells the story of Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock), a hotshot New York book editor who’s facing deportation and needs to marry her hated assistant, Andrew (Ryan Reynolds), to remain in the country.  Unfortunately, she hatches this scheme right on the heels of Andrew’s grandmother’s (Betty White) birthday, forcing him to go up north to Alaska; and, of course, her to go up with him, to announce the proposal to the rest of the family.

It’s contrived and obvious – and doesn’t deviate from that with any enormous surprises, but just keeps ploughing the rom-com genre. The two leads are pleasant and convincing enough but without some originality it’s difficult to be sold on the story, let alone the characters.

This really is one just for those who are either Rom-com completists or like the work of Bullock/Reynolds. Not my cup of tea.
