‘The Happening’ Cinema Review

The Happening‘The Happening’ is a bizarre film from M. Night Shyamalan, the director of ‘The Sixth Sense’, ‘Signs’ and ‘The Village.’

The plot is unusual and unique and leaves the audience constantly wondering just what is actually going on. It revolves around Elliot, his wife and friends as they try to stay alive and stay ahead of the ‘toxins’ and the natural destruction taking place around them.

Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg) is an interesting main character. He seems unintentionally humorous and remains calm throughout the film despite all the disaster surrounding himself and his friends. Many of the characters are strange and add an unexpected element of comedy to the thriller.

The film remains ambiguous as Shyamalan provides no real explanation to the cause of the disaster. Comments are made by certain characters to suggest what might have caused the incident but, it is generally left open to the individual interpretation of audience members.

‘The Happening’ is a gripping thriller that is quite different to anything else in its genre. Shyamalan definitely puts his weird and wonderful stamp on this film and it follows on nicely from his previous works.

‘The Happening’ will appeal to fans of thrillers and to people who like to go to the cinema to see something a little bit different. Audiences will leave the cinema questioning what the film was all about and wondering what message Shyamalan was trying to convey.
